It is a staple of Middle Eastern mezze (appetizer) platters and is typically served cold or at room temperature with pita bread, fresh vegetables, or alongside grilled meats.

While often confused with baba ghanoush, mutabal is distinct. Traditionally, mutabal includes tahini and yogurt for a creamier, richer texture. Conversely, baba ghanoush in the Levant is typically a "salad" version containing chopped vegetables (tomatoes, onions, peppers), pomegranate molasses, and often no tahini.
